A Scary Night

I have been working in the office this week for a girl who is out of town. I almost always make dinner but by the time Caleb and I get home at night, we are pretty tired. Last night, I didn't feel like cooking so I suggested we go to Chilis (we both have been craving fajitas). I ran home and grabbed something for Caleb to wear (because he was still in his work shirt) and we were off! We had a nice dinner and started to head home. We were completely stopped at a red light when a truck going at least 35-40 miles an hour crashed into the back of us totally unexpectedly! We never hear tires screeching or anything... So this guy hit us at full speed and because his brakes were obviously not being used, the only thing to stop him was Caleb's car!

The actual collision lasted for at least 20 seconds as Caleb had time to look over at me and say "what the freak is that guy doing?" and I said "I don't know!" all while still being hit. The guy finally backed up and drove off at a high speed. Caleb looked at me and asked if I was okay, then jumped out to see if he could get the license plate before the guy was out of sight. Unfortunately, the car was going a little faster than Caleb can run so he didn't catch it. I called 911 and the police were dispatched. We met with the guy who was in the car in front of us (he was pretty angry until he saw his car and realized it really wasn't Caleb's fault) and some other witnesses. I realized I had a huge goose egg on my head and they even got some ice for me from the gas station nearby. The police officer showed up and at that moment a man in a military uniform came up to us and told us he wrote down the license plate number of the run-away truck! Thank goodness!

They caught the guy and Caleb even got to ride in the back of the police car to ID him. It turns out that an accident is just a traffic violation, a hit and run is a misdemeanor and, unfortunately, a hit and run with injuries is a felony! Poor guy! We went to the ER (I promised the paramedic I would go) and spent 5 hours there until we were seen. The doctor said I was okay to go home. It probably was a miracle that we didn't get any severe injuries. It was definitely because we were wearing our seatbelts. So finally, at 5 something we got home and went to sleep! What a night!
